Chantix Lawyer | Chantix Lawsuit Evaluation

Chantix Case Evaluation Focuses on Medical History

Seth Harris | April 3rd, 2012

Dr. Curt D. Furberg, a Wake Forest medical professor, has described Chantix as “one of the most harmful prescription drugs on the U.S. market” due to its significant side effects. These Chantix side effects include visual problems, depression, cardiovascular events, Chantix suicide, violence, and worsening of diabetes. Controversy remains, however, surrounding the link between the drug (also known as varenicline) and particular injuries.

An individual who has been injured by the drug should consider some of the factors a Chantix lawyer would examine during a Chantix lawsuit evaluation.

Chantix lawyer must prove causation for recovery

Several significant Chantix side effects, including Chantix depression and cardiovascular problems, may be affected by an individual’s preexisting conditions or family medical history.

During a Chantix lawsuit evaluation, a Chantix lawyer will examine a potential plaintiff’s medical history to determine if the causal link between use of the medication and the applicable condition could be proven at trial. Medical evidence suggests that Chantix can cause depression and heart problems in individuals with no history of either disease.

While researchers agree that individuals attempting to quit smoking are at a higher risk of developing psychological symptoms than the general population, studies have shown that Chantix exacerbates such symptoms more than alternatives like Zyban or nicotine replacement drugs. In one analysis of 3,000 reports of depression and suicidal behaviors recorded in the FDA’s Adverse Event Reporting System, 90 percent were linked to Chantix.

In reports of completed suicides of people undergoing smoking cessation, 92 percent were attributed to Chantix suicide as opposed to other drugs.

More heart problems reported to a Chantix lawyer

A 2011 study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that Chantix is linked to an increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and other serious cardiovascular problems for smokers without a previous history of heart disease when compared with smokers who did not use the drug. Given that the drug’s labels do not warn of such a danger, individuals who first developed cardiovascular problems after using Chantix have consulted with an experienced Chantix lawyer for a Chantix lawsuit evaluation.

Chantix lawyer will evaluate pending litigation

Thousand of plaintiffs have joined in a large Chantix multidistrict litigation (MDL) proceeding in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. Parties are currently engaged in pre-trial discovery and preparing for the first series of bellwether trials.

Individuals who have been hurt by Chantix may still join the consolidated MDL, and many injured patients continue to consult with an experienced Chantix lawyer to determine their options.
